The Green Party has stated that while the government has described it’s programme as being one based on “Freedom, fairness, and responsibility” it is anything but fair.

Green Party MLA Brian Wilson stated:
“This programme is an attack on the sick, the poor and the vulnerable.  Ultimately the cuts in public spending will hit those on the lowest incomes hardest while those who led us into a recession are being let off the hook.
There is no mention of a Robin Hood tax that would see the tax payer repaid for our bail out of the banks.  The welfare reform bill will see sick people pushed off benefits while we expect to see the wealthy getting a break on inheritance tax. The part privatisation of Royal Mail is the thin end of the wedge that could eventually see rural post offices put under threat to increase a private companies profits.”

The Green Party’s Westminster campaign focussed on the cleaning up of politics which they believe is also missing from this programme.  Mr Wilson continued:
“Although the people voted for electoral reform, the Lib Dems have caved in and agreed to a referendum on the alternative vote.  This is not a proportionate system and will merely reinforce large parties.”
